richard vanecko the nephew of former mayor richard daley appears in court today on charges of involuntary manslaughter. good afternoon. i'm robert jordan in today for steve sanders. and i'm dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. wgn's randi belisimo is live at the criminal courts building with our top story. he was here for a total of about one hour and 15 minutes. he'll be back here at the same time next monday after attorneys have time to decide if they will be seeking a new judge.

reporters waited in the security line. the is a process done in open court. he said he would not voluntarily take himself out of the case. >> but we're having some technical difficulties.

phil latest on that investigation. neighbors say they heard multiple gunshots and saw the officer had a child with him on this happened. the officers 34 years old. hours after the office server shock to the area between two apartment buildings was still blocked off. >> never know. this neighborhood is real nice. many police officers and firefighters live, one retired officer says he is not surprising given the state of the economy. someone

approached the officer as he was about to take the child out of the car seat. >> he is not positive but he believes he may have hit the offender. his life is here. i met with his mother. he is a couple of children. a couple of relatives who are here. we're taking care of the family. the officer is in stable condition. his left wrist is broken. the chest wound is a superficial wound.

a man accused of sexually assaulting and robbing a woman in the uptown neighborhood is expected to appear in court today for a bond hearing. 32-year-old jason gurneau is accused of attacking the woman early yesterday outside her apartment building on north sheridan road. >> i heard a woman yelling for help. i call the police once i realized what was going on. police arrested gurneau as he tried to get away on a bicycle. he's charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault aggravated battery, and resisting a police officer.

in the three year-old was found guilty of the murder of a seven year-old girl. she is subducted from a street corner in the town of sycamore. the murder remains unsolved. a relative convinced police to reopen that investigation. a hearing on the three sudanese mooseheart high school basketball players is on this afternoon in downstate bloomington. the batavia school will fight a ruling from the "illinois high school association" that disqualified the athletes. the association found mooseheart unfairly recruited the students, based on their athletic ability. "mooseheart" takes children from dangerous environments and gives

them housing and education. the school says its scholarships had nothing to do with athletics. charges have been filed against the former mayor's nephew. >> he pleaded not guilty and is able to leave the building. he was here for about one hour. he will be back here at the same time next monday after it attorneys decide whether they will be seeking a new judge. the nephew deprived at 26 and california just after 9:00. accompanied by three attorneys and no family members. he did not answer any questions from reporters. he waited in the security line. he was randomly assigned to judge arthur hill. across as done in open court. he pleaded not guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter. he said he would not voluntarily recuse himself from the case.

the judge was also appointed to the board when daly was mayor. he came back to serve as chief deputy state attorney. despite all of that the judge says he can be fair and impartial. he wants to give them time to consider. in 2004 as a drunken brawl resulted in a death of a man. the 21 year-old was the aggressor and in close the case. special prosecutor noted that he always david by about 100 lbs.. if convicted he faces anywhere from probation to five years in prison.

after 75 years, saint gregory the great high school on the north side is closing its doors. according to the school's website: this year will be saint gregory's last. the school says lack of chicago is poised to break an 18-year-old record today, for the amount of snow that hasn't fallen. so far this year, there have been 280 days without snow accumulation. the number of snowless days ties the record set in 1994. if no snow falls today, chicago will set a new record. there have been traces of snowfall in suburban areas, but not enough to be considered "measurable" snow. tom skilling will have more in his full forecast. next at noon. president obama hits the road to talk taxes to union workers. after holding a private meeting with the speaker of the house. investigators are looking into the cause of a plane crash that killed a popular mexican- american singer. and the d-j's behind a prank call to the hospital treating kate middleton are speaking out for the first time.

for its limitations on unions. yesterday, president obama met with house speaker john boehner at the white house to discuss how to resolve the fiscal cliff. few details were released about the meeting. if lawmakers fail to strike a deal before the end of the year automatic tax increases and spending cuts will go into effect. the one-on-one meeting was the first between the two leaders since election day. a member of the dallas cowboys is out on bond, after being charged in a crash deadly crash that killed a teammate over the weekend. defensive lineman josh brent was released on half a million dollars bond yesterday. authorities say he was speeding on saturday, when he hit a curb. the vehicle then flipped over

and caught fire. cowboys linebacker jerry brown was killed. brent is charged with intoxication manslaughter. brent and brown formed a lasting friendship when they played together at the university of illinois. back in 2-thousand-9, brent also served a 60 day sentence for a d-u-i in champaign. investigators are looking into the cause of a plane crash that killed a mexican-american singer in northern mexico. jenni rivera and at least four- others were killed when their jet crased into a mountainous area, just minutes after take- off yesterday morning. rivera was known for singing traditional mexican ballads. she was also a judge on a reality-singing show in in mexico. rivera's make-up artist publicist and two pilots were on also on board the plane. officials say the plane was built in 19-69 and had malfunctioned once before in 2- thousand-5. jenni rivera was 42 years old. two australian radio d-j's could face criminal charges over a prank call targeting kate middleton and a woman's apparent suicide. the d-j's impersonated queen elizabeth and prince charles during their radio show last

tuesday. they called the hospital where middleton was being treated for severe morning sickness. police in london say the nurse who transferred the call apparently took her own life days later. the radio show was taken off the air and the d-j's say they regret what happened. we assumed that we were going to get told off. the d-j's could face charges for breaking laws that ban recording conversations without the person's consent. venezuelan president hugo chavez is now in cuba for cancer treatment. chavez arrived today after announcing late saturday that his cancer had returned. he has spoken publicly about his battle with cancer in recent years , but has never revealed what type he has. chavez had declared himself cancer-free in july, but said last week doctors detected malignant cells. chavez has said if his health worsens, his vice president should replace him. next, shipping 200 packages a second. fed ex kicks into high gear for

a winter storm forced officials in south dakota to close several interstates yesterday. the storm then moved east. dumping more than 17-inches of snow on a little town in southern minnesota. state police report more than 3-hundreds accidents due to the weather. officials now say they're dealing with high winds and drifting snow. the storm brought the house brand. a very active pattern here. these disturbances will come through from time to time. the next one is due later in the week. putting us near the reins . we are going to have to watch each one of those. it has been

time for sports. the bears injured defense could not contain adrian peterson, while jay cutler was knocked out of a crucial, division game.

the bears were without brian urlacher in minnesota. first play of the game peterson broke a few tackles to go 51 yards and set up one of his two touchdowns. he had 154 yards. bears down in the third when cutler overthrew brandon marshall. harrison smith intercepted and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown. then in the fourth. cutler was hit hard behind the line of scrimmage. he finished the drive but left the game with neck stiffness. he should be o-k, but the bears lost 21-14 their fourth loss in five games. it is going to dictate what happens with us. we're still in position to accomplish all of

in medical watch. the benefits of iron supplements for underweight babies. babies are considered "low birth weight" when they're born weighing five and a half pounds

or less. they're at risk for behavioral problems and iron deficiency but a new study suggests, giving underweight babies iron supplements may reduce their risk of behavioral problems later on. swedish researchers followed a group of low birth weight infants who were randomly assigned to receive a daily dose of iron, or a placebo. when they reached the age of three.. the babies who did not receive iron supplements were four and a half times more likely to show signs of behavioral problems. a new study finds getting a knee replacement can raise a person's risk of gaining weight. 30 percent of the knee replacement patients in the study gained five percent of more of their body weight in the five years following surgery. part of the explanation could be the age at which patients get knee replacements.. most are in their 50's and 60's, when they tend to gain weight anyway. the researchers also say people who've spent years adapting to knee pain by taking it easy, don't automatically change their habits when the pain is reduced.
